This is the guiding principle of our company, and by extension, our lives. It is comprised of three simple rules:
Don't make junk.
Don't buy junk.
Don't keep junk.
In a way, we started doing this work, and started this company as a refutation of mediocrity. We don't think furniture or any other objects should be as poorly made and as short-lived as most of them are. We live in a time when there are more possible materials and more possible techniques for assembling our physical environment than at any other point in history, yet living at this pinnacle is most often expressed in the production and purchase of more objects, rather than better ones; of temporary objects, rather than permanent ones.
We are not the first people, by a long, long way, to talk about this. We are in the fairly rare category of people who spend their working lives combatting it by action and example. We hope that we are a worthy addition to their ranks, and feel lucky to have the chance to measure up.
On this site, you will find pieces about WHY we do what we do, and for those who are curious about such things, HOW we do what we do, down to the details of how we cut joinery or the best tool we've found for a particular job. We will try to update it a couple of times a week for starters, and if that goes well, we'll pick up the pace.
